Pre-Primary Reading Program
Learning to read is one of the most important skills a child will develop. Little Learners
Educational Center is dedicated to providing an excellent education for your child
through our individualized reading program. pre-primary children develop the skills
necessary for reading at different ages and teachers at Little Learners will observe
children for signs of reading readiness. At that time an individualized program will be
planned and introduced to the child. Parents will also be informed on what they can do
to partner with teachers in order to promote their child’s literacy development.
Literacy begins when a child uses a word to describe an object or uses an object to
represent another, such as when a child uses a box to represent a car. During the first
stage of reading development children realize that groups of letters can mean
something. Children have the ability to learn numerous words that mean something to
them, such as favorite restaurants or names. During the phonemic awareness stage of
development children become aware of the specific letter sounds in words. The next
stage of development occurs when children develop the ability to recognize several
letters as working together to create a sound, such as, ch, sh, -tion and –ing.
Child development experts agree that young children learn through their senses. Little
Learners reading program utilizes the senses of touch, sound, and sight. Children will
be introduced to letters using sandpaper letters which the teacher will guide the child’s
finger along the sandpaper letter as they say the sound. The letter sound will be
associated with the first letter of their name, the name of a family member, the name of a
classroom friend, a familiar object or a familiar food. The sound will be reinforced with a
mini book with pictures that begin with the letter.
Little Learners Educational Center is also committed in utilizing the lasted technology in
assisting children in their literacy development. Computer programs that promote letter
sounds and reading development will be installed on pre-primary classroom computers.
